Orixás statuettes can be found not only in Brazilian households practicing the Afro-Brazilian religion of Umbanda, but also in families that do not participate in these rituals but believe in the power of the Orixás, who represent the forces of nature and also represent male and female archetypes.

Obaluaê is a god who is strongly connected to the Earth. He is one of the oldest Orixá who brings depth to our lives. He can take away all sickness from our lives because he sees the minute details of human experience that can cause illness.
He is the mediator between the spiritual and physical worlds, and it is because of this that he shows us that everything can be overcome if we want to live in the human form. Obaluaê is both a symbol of true humility on the path of life and a great teacher of its deeper understanding.

This Orixá is a symbol of humility, hope, healing and light. He is the one who teaches us that in the utter loss of self, within the darkness, at the very bottom, there is a turning point. A mind that in a cry of faith rises to the light and fills itself with light.

Obaluaê is Orixá, who has the ability to see everything, even the innermost awareness and experience, every detail of human life, in its entirety. He explores our humility, and in doing so, he himself teaches us humility. A humility that does not corrupt the heart, but sees other people as equals and always seeks the path of trust, hope and acceptance of differences.

It is Orixá that is very often sought after by people who are plagued and tormented by any illness, because Obaluaê can take the illness away from us. In the Umbanda tradition, Orixás are not asked for health, because these deities are not the ones who preserve health. But Obaluaê is an Orixá who knows the doctrine of taking away sickness. For this reason, requests and prayers for the "withdrawal" of sickness are often carried to him.

He himself, is shrouded in long straw, so that it is said that when he comes, only his feet and hands are visible. It is said that he carries such a great light that he must be veiled so that he does not blind people and we can be near him. This also symbolizes that Obaluaê is always more of an observer who does not participate or communicate much. He only intervenes to help those who call on him because of his empathy, his capacity for empathy and his understanding of human beings and their pain.

The name Obaluaê translates as " Lord ( deity) of the earth". He is the one who is strongly connected to the earth and knows the mystery of reincarnation, the incarnation of the soul into a physical body, here on earth. He is the one who realizes how material burdens are enriching for spiritual growth. Material burdens and difficulties through which the mind of man and the soul are lifted. In the absolute loss of self and everything, within the darkness, when we become darkness itself for a moment and it completely consumes our inner self. It is in this moment that the primordial beginning of inner light is born, the inner turning from our own nature, the overturning of the soul, the transformation of matter into spirit.

Deepening into the qualities of light, goodness and humility, Obaluaê guides us through the illnesses, the experience of the hardships of matter, when in the moment of shock and pain we truly touch everything that needs to be taken from our lives. His support and empathy helps us to go to the bottom of the experience and rise from our own strength and our own source to live again, to experience the ecstasy of inner rebirth and renewal.

Obaluaê is the representative of the inner beauty that lies within each of us and is more powerful and radiant than any earthly beauty.

We call upon this Orixá when we need help on the path of rebirth and transformation. Asking for the removal of the illnesses and difficulties in our lives associated with matter, so that we may be able to touch the bottom of the soul, the darkness, and rise again on our spiritual journey.

Orixás statues tradition in Brazil

Orixás statuettes can be found not only in Brazilian households that practice the Afro-Brazilian religion of Umbanda, but also in families that do not participate in these rituals, but believe in the power of Orixás to represent the forces of nature and to represent male and female archetypes. We can have Orixás at home that we identify with or, conversely, by acquiring a statue of a particular Orixás, we contact the qualities and abilities we would like to have. It is good to know that there are several Umbanda lineages in Brazil, and so it is possible that the information we bring you that we have encountered in central Brazil will be slightly different in other parts of Brazil. There are sometimes differences of opinion, for example, about the colour of the candles that are lit by individual Orixás - for example, Ogum is sometimes blue, sometimes red. Therefore, if you use Orixás statues for your rituals and energy work, we recommend that you take our recommendations as inspiration, but ultimately it is you who develops your intuition and defines how you honor your Orixás.

How to work with Orixás archetypes for your personal development

The characteristics of the individual Orixás and the archetypes they represent easily lead to projections in meaning: This Orixá will help me win love, another will give me courage. And to some extent, that's okay - Orixás give us the strength and the necessary approaches to deal with our life situations. However, it is the underlying perception that leads us to animism.

We, in working on ourselves, offer you an approach to Orixás as impulses that come into our lives and show us something essential. They teach us on a moral and spiritual level.

"When we imagine that we are walking on the path of our lives, Orixá is like a horse that appears on the path and invites us to ride. When we agree, it adds another dimension to our life's journey."

If you're serious about studying Umbanda and Orixás, get yourself a white outfit, which is typical of Brazilian umbandistas. White symbolizes peace, purity and positive energy.
