Abalone shells are gorgeous natural vessels smudging, which will also grace your home altar with their pearlescent beauty.
Native Americans traditionally used the shells to burn herbs such as White Sage or Yerba Santa or the sacred wood Palo Santo. Shells are a symbol of the water element. Together with the herbs, the element of earth and burning, or fire, and finally with smoke, the element of air, the heating ritual becomes complete.
The shell will look beautiful on the original stand made of hand carved interlocking pieces of wood, which will provide stability and security during the actual smudging.

smudging, or Portuguese - Defumação, is an important activity not only in the ceremonial work with space and energy and in purifying one's own or someone else's. Various sacred herbs or resins are used for ritual smudging across cultures. smudging They serve a variety of purposes. Sacred smoke (Fumaça) cleanses from negative influences or calls spirits to help us in our work, or serves to carry our prayers to the creator. Each smoking substance has its own spirit, its own character and is suited to different ways of working.

How do you do that?
The abalon shell is well used both for direct smudging of herbs and as a container for smudging with carbon. If you choose to smudging with carbon, fill the shell preferably with sand or salt. Place the lit charcoal on top of it and you can already burn anything, and the shell with sand will keep it safe and, by being on a stand, it will shield the heat that would otherwise radiate to the mat. If you want to smoke herbs directly, you can simply light them in the shell itself, or use it to store smouldering herbs.

Do not leave the fumigant unattended or near flammable objects.
