"Why do we insist on making something useful out of life? We must have the courage to be radically alive and not haggle for survival."
Natural nations have already had to deal with the end of the world. Now the whole of humanity is heading for the abyss.

Global pandemics, extreme weather and huge fires define our era, also called the Anthropocene. Ailton Krenak comes from Brazil, where he is considered an important voice of natural peoples. He shows how the current environmental crisis is rooted in a somewhat misguided conception of the concept of humanity - we think that human beings are superior to other forms of nature and therefore we can exploit them at will. To stop environmental catastrophe, according to Krenak, we must reject the implications of this superior perspective and embrace a new form of dreaming that will allow us to find our place in nature again. In this book, he shows how to do it.

For the Czech edition of the texts of Ailton Krenak, Šárka Grauová has compiled a selection of several books published in Portuguese.

Who is the author?

AILTON KRENAK (*1953) is a member of the Krenak tribe of Brazil. He was born in the eastern state of Minas Gerais on the middle reaches of the Doce River. Despite the ecological disasters caused by mining, the Krenaks have chosen to remain on their territory and to commemorate the cosmic dimension of our existence on Earth.

His public work has helped to transform the relationship between Indian tribes and the majority society. In 1984, he became widely known for his appearance at Brazil's National Constituent Assembly, where he added black face paint to a speech in a white suit, a traditional Crenac gesture expressing both deep sorrow and readiness to fight.

Ailton Krenak makes regular public appearances and his activities spark very lively public debates. Part of his Indian identity is that he conveys information orally, through lectures, debates and interviews. His books are produced by transcribing live speeches and include the personality of the transcriber and editor. Book Ideas for postponing the end of the world(Ideias para adiar o fim do mundo / How to Postpone the End of the World, 2019) has been published in 6 languages and has sold over 50,000 copies in Brazil. It was followed by Zítřek není na Sale (O amanhã não está à venda / Tomorrow Is Not for Sale , 2020) and We don't live for utility (A vida não é útil / Life is Hardly Useful, 2020 ).

Through his narrative, Ailton Krenak reminds us of the importance of having the courage to be radically alive and, by working with the space of dreams, to be able to glimpse those dimensions of life that go beyond the plane of profit and ourselves.

In 2008 he received the Order of Cultural Merit, and in 2016 he received an honorary doctorate from Juiz de Forza University.
