The blanket was made by Lourdes Mahua Venancino, a shaman of the Shipibo community around Pucalpa, Peru. The detailed and beautiful work carries the power of sacred rainforest spirits and visions.

Shipibo's embroidered ceremonial blankets reflect the cosmology of the tribe, and their patterns represent visions associated with healing and natural medicine. Shipibo themselves say that their traditional patterns represent the paths of medicine, and the little dots are "doctorsitos," or spirit healers.
