This healing and sacred herb has an important place in daily rituals and prayers, as well as a place in indigenous medicine. The active ingredient in sweet grass that makes it smell so good is coumarin.

The Latin name for the sweet grass is "hierchloe odorata", which literally translates as "sacred grass" and is found in both Europe and America. It is associated with many northern European traditions that are similar to Native American/North American ceremonial practices - for the scent and for use in spirituality and prayer. In North America it is found throughout Canada and as far south in the Americas as the state of New Mexico.

Sweetgrass is designed for smudging. It is believed to please all spirits.

How to properly light a sweetgrass braid:
  • Cut off the end of the braid. Cut off the end that is a little more dried out and has less green in it.
  • Please dispose of the cut end respectfully, do not throw it away (it is a medicinal plant).
  • Light the cut end of the braid by holding it in the flame and gently rotating the braid.
  • Blow on the hot end.
  • Gently shake the braid around your area.
  • Cop will smolder and produce smoke, it should not burn with flame.
