Jurema-preta (black), known as Mimosa Hostilis, is a shrub belonging to the Fabaceae family, found almost all over the northeast of Brazil and also in El Salvador, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, Colombia and Venezuela. It is traditionally used for medicinal and religious purposes. Its bark is used for medicinal purposes.
Jurema allowed members of the tribe to look into the world of the dead. It was mainly used in ceremonies that preceded the tribe's military campaigns. Jurema allowed the tribe members to stay up all night before the fight and be connected by healing visions.

Products from this tree are used primarily for skin care in case of wrinkles, herpes, acne, scars, eczema and atopic, burns, stretch marks, cellulite, cuts... Powder from the bark contains 16% tannins, which act astringently, thereby stopping the bleeding of the skin. This process helps protect the body from infection, while the skin builds new protective tissue. Currently, Tepezcohuite (the Mayan name for Mimosa Hostilis) is used to make hair and skin products that are used to rejuvenate the skin.
