Description
Jurema-preta (black, known as Mimosa Hostilis is a shrub belonging to the fabaceae family, occurring almost throughout the northeast of Brazil and also in El Salvador, Honduras, Mexico, Panama, Colombia and Venezuela. Traditionally, it is used for medicinal and religious purposes. Its bark is used for medicinal purposes, and the bark of the root plant is widely used in religious ceremonies, as it contains a large amount of tryptamines.
Jurema allowed members of the tribe to look into the world of the dead. It was mainly used in ceremonies that preceded the tribe's military campaigns. Jurema allowed the tribe members to stay up all night before the fight and be connected by healing visions.
