Mulungu is a medicinal plant native to Latin America and occurs from Costa Rica to Brazil. A decoction of the bark of Mulung since time immemorial used by the indigenous population as a natural sedative.

Erythrina mulungu, a tree up to 10 m tall, is also known in Brazil by the names colorines, chilicote or tzompanquahuitl and in folk medicine, a decoction of its bark is used for depression, stress, hysteria, panic disorders, insomnia and other sleep disorders, as well as liver diseases. Mulungu also lowers blood pressure and normalises cardiac arrhythmias. As a natural sedative, it has a hepatonic effect, that is, it tones, balances and strengthens the liver, breaking down the high levels of enzymes present in the liver and sclerosis.

Mulungu a number of biologically active substances, the most important of which are the iso-flavonoids daidzein and phaseollin, and especially the alkaloids.
